Inside the crater itself, it is possible to see glimpses of steam rising from the side of the crater demonstrating that Mt Vesuvius is an active volcano. When you finally reach the edge of the crater, you will be flabbergasted at its size.
The Eruption of Mount Vesuvius Pompeii
Almost 2,000 years later, You have the opportunity to explore the preserved ruins of this famous disaster. Almost 2,000 years later, you have the opportunity to explore the site of this famous disaster and see first-hand the houses, streets and public buildings miraculously preserved by the volcanic ash. A busy commercial centre with a population of 10,000-20,000, the ancient Pompeii covered about 160 acres on the seaward end of the fertile Sarno Plain. Wine jars have been come by in the Pompeii excavations bearing what is apparently the world’s earliest known marketing pun, Vesuvinum (combining Vesuvius and the Latin for wine, vinum).
Naples Pompeii Eruption of Vesuvius
Following the AD79 eruption, the people and buildings of Pompeii were covered in up to twelve different layers of soil. Pompeii’s reputation for greatness in its day for its’ magnificent frescoes adorning the walls and floors of the Villas have been well-preserved.
Mount Vesuvius What Happened ??
The last major eruption was in March 1944 and it destroyed the villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Massa di Somma, Ottaviano, and part of San Giorgio a Cremano. The eruption of 1906 was particularly destructive, killing over 100 people and ejecting the most lava ever recorded from a Vesuvian eruption.
While Vesuvius is not thought likely to erupt in the immediate future, the danger posed by future eruptions is seen as very high in light of the volcano’s tendency towards sudden, extremely violent explosions, and the very dense human population on and around the mountain.
Pliy The Younger Mount Vesuvius
Many contemporary sculptures are described and discussed by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia published in 77 AD. This volcanic eruption is the first to be described in detail. The letter-writing Pliny the Younger was stationed about 18 miles away in Misenum from which vantage point he could see the eruption and feel the preceding earthquakes. Campi Flegrei, moreover known as the Phlegraean Fields (from Greek meaning burning fields), is a large 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) wide caldera situated to the west of the city of Naples. Pliny was here with his Uncle when the eruption of Mt Vesuvius happened.
Mt Vesuvius Lava
ll the zones at the slopes of the mountain are formed by transported earth of lava mud Monte Somma which goes down from the steep slopes in the rainy seasons through deep and narrow grooves called channels or more commonly “lagni”. Mount Vesuvius was built up by a series of lava flows and a number of smaller explosive eruptions interspersed in-between.
Pompeii Volcanoes Area
Hundreds of bodies have been discovered since excavations of the city began. They tell us a great deal about the city’s and it’s inhabitants last moments. It lay buried and forgotten for hundreds of years following the eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD.Through the remains and ruins of this ancient city, you can picture the everyday life of the Imperial Age and imagine the panic felt by the people in their last moments before the city was so disastrously buried. Both Pompeii and Herculaneum have since been excavated to reveal many intact buildings and wall paintings.
Pompeii Herculaneum
Herculaneum was properly rediscovered in 1738 by workmen digging for the foundations of a summer palace for the King of Naples, Charles of Bourbon. Nowhere in the world could give a deeper insight into Roman life than the dramatic seaside towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. A Herculaneum tour gives a beautiful essence of Herculaneum without making you feel like you missed Pompeii.
